Cheekbones, or malar prominences, are the most important features that define facial width in the upper face. Along with widely placed sculpted cheekbones are usually widely spaced eyes. This is the main reason why shorter, wider faces photograph in a more aesthetically pleasing way as compared to long, narrow faces. In the person who is slightly narrow with flatter, less projecting cheekbones, the implementation of cheekbone enhancement (whether it be with a long-lasting injectable or permanent implant) can give the appearance of wider-spaced eyes. When one studies the three-quarter view of a photogenic face, one finds a series of “s”’s, or serpentine curves and facial contours: the temple goes in; the cheekbone goes out; the cheek area goes in; the jaw goes out, ending with the neck going in. Malar implants, since they are bilateral, must be placed carefully and exactly. Dr. Weintraub prefers placement of these implants through the intraoral route (i.e., through the mouth), so there are no visible incisions on the face. One of the fine points in achieving long-lasting successful malar-implant placement is making the implant pocket exactly the size of the implant edges, ensuring that no movement or shifting can take place. Dr. Weintraub’s experience and expertise make for a superior result with this procedure. Dr. Weintraub’s Viewpoint: Lucy Liu Lucy Liu has strikingly beautiful features with gently angled eyes, wide and well-defined cheekbones, as well as a lovely and well-proportioned nose and chin complex. The cosmetic procedures to get this look could include cheekbone implants, chin augmentation, rhinoplasty to raise the nasal bridge, and surgery to sharpen the upper eyelid blink crease.
