What’s the Recovery Time for a Face Lift in New York, NY?
Facelift surgery, medically known as “rhytidectomy,” is one of the most effective ways for women and men to improve their appearance by rejuvenating and refreshing their facial structure. Many patients will look for an experienced NYC surgeon for this type of facial plastic surgery to help correct obvious signs of aging caused by factors such as genetics, smoking, diet, stress, sun exposure, and the effects of gravity and time. All of these factors contribute to sagging midfaces, bags under the eyes, deep nasolabial folds (the lines from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth), hanging jowls, a loose jawline, “turkey-gobble” neck, vertically tight cords on the neck (“platysmal bands”), and lax facial skin. These undesirable aspects of one’s appearance understandably impact one’s life in many ways, from personal relationships to business success.
Thanks to aesthetic surgery, both male and female patients do not have to accept the effects of aging as permanent. However, as with any surgical procedures, understanding the recovery period and process is vital to patients seeking the best facelift results. Beyond achieving natural results that enhance their attractiveness, patients must know what to expect before, during, and after facelift surgery, and how to follow detailed aftercare instructions to facilitate a smooth recovery.
At Barry M. Weintraub M.D., our Board-certified plastic surgeon and exceptional staff demonstrate professionalism and compassion, ensuring that every patient feels confident and cared for every step of the way on their surgical journey. As your most trusted secret, we have been quietly serving NYC and the international community for over 35 years.

What Is a Facelift?
A facelift is a sophisticated surgical procedure designed to reduce visible signs of aging in the face and neck. Over time, inevitabilities like gravity, environmental exposure, and natural aging can lead to the loss of skin elasticity and the development of folds, sagging skin, and deep creases around the cheeks, jawline, and neck. A facelift helps reverse these effects by lifting and repositioning the underlying tissues, eliminating excess skin, and creating a refreshed and “cleaner” aesthetic anatomy.
Facelift surgery isn’t about creating a drastically altered appearance; it’s about achieving natural, refined enhancement. Dr. Weintraub infuses his practice with a “less is more” philosophy, creating understated, conservative results that leave patients looking refreshed without any telltale signs of surgery. Patients are not made to look like unrecognizable versions of themselves but rather, more like their favorite photos where the camera angle and lighting are “just right.” One way to anticipate the effect of a sophisticated facelift is to lie on one’s back and look in a mirror, as in this position, gravity often mimics a facelift.
What Does the Facelift Procedure Entail?
Understanding what happens before, during, and after facelift surgery helps set realistic expectations.
Preparing for Surgery
Preparation facilitates a successful outcome. Dr. Weintraub takes the time to perform a comprehensive consultation, during which he evaluates a patient’s facial anatomy, health history, and aesthetic goals. His clear, personalized instructions may include:
- Ceasing all nicotine products well in advance of surgery.
- Avoiding certain medications and supplements that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin and vitamin E.
- Refraining from drinking alcohol.
- Obtaining full medical clearance to ensure the patient is of optimal health.
- If one colors one’s hair, it is advised to do this five days before surgery.
Patients who come to Dr. Weintraub’s practice also have the benefit of an extended, meticulous consultation, during which he and his team address all questions and concerns to instill complete confidence.
The Surgical Process for Facial Rejuvenation
Dr. Weintraub performs only one facelift surgery per day to devote his undivided attention to each patient. While comfortable under twilight anesthesia during the facelift procedure, patients are treated to Dr. Weintraub’s careful facial dissection in three separate planes, or depths, to address the different tension needed to produce the most natural results so the face never looks “pulled” or “fake.” Dr. Weintraub employs the deep-plane facelift technique when needed, which focuses on the difficult area around the marionette lines and jowls for those with advanced signs of aging, helping to create long-lasting results. Our Board-certified plastic surgeon then carefully hides incisions in the inside of the tragus of the ear and in the body’s natural creases to minimize visibility, and closes all incisions using exceedingly fine sutures. He wears loupes that magnify five times human vision, similar to what a jeweler wears when working on a fine watch.
Our New York plastic surgeon often incorporates other surgeries in full facelift based on patients’ concerns. For example, he can combine a NYC facelift with a neck lift, lateral brow lift, eyelid surgery, chin implant, rhinoplasty, laser skin resurfacing, and other facial-rejuvenation procedures to harmonize the face and create a cohesive appearance.
In particular, a subtle rhinoplasty performed in conjunction with a facelift can contribute to a much more youthful appearance. As a consequence of facial aging, the nose often becomes bulbous and downturned in both men and women. In addition, a conservative chin augmentation with the use of a chin implant defines and recreates a youthful jawline. The secret to achieving a rejuvenated appearance is knowing just how much to correct for an absolutely natural-looking result, and never overdoing surgery.
Patients who undergo facelift surgery in New York, NY enjoy the discretion and comfort of Dr. Weintraub’s private and immaculate fully-equipped surgical center, one of the most advanced, licensed, and accredited outpatient facilities in New York City. His state-of-the-art surgical center employs cutting-edge technology and is QUAD A-accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities. In addition, Dr. Weintraub has his own team of Board-certified anesthesiologists with tremendous experience in plastic-surgical procedures.
How Long Does a NYC Facelift Take?
A NYC facelift typically takes between three to four hours or more, depending on the complexity of the surgery and any additional procedures that might be performed simultaneously. Dr. Weintraub employs a meticulous approach, focusing on personalized care and attention to detail, which can influence the duration.
Recovery Time for Facelift Surgery: What to Expect
While every patient’s recovery experience will vary slightly, here’s what to expect at each stage:
Immediately After Surgery
Once Dr. Weintraub completes the surgery, we carefully monitor patients in the recovery area before discharging them with one of our private-duty nurses. The nurse remains with the patient for the first two days and nights before allowing them to return home. Most often, patients stay at one of two nearby hotels (The Pierre or The Plaza), where they receive reduced rates as patients of Dr. Weintraub’s. The nurse oversees the patient, keeping them comfortable and safe, and ensures that the recovery process is smooth. During this time, the nurse will be providing Dr. Weintraub with real-time assessments of the patient, making sure that the healing process is going well. Before releasing the patient, the nurse will remove the bandages to allow the patient to shower and to be quite presentable when returning home. It’s possible to experience slight swelling and bruising in the first 24 to 48 hours.
The First Week
During the first week, most swelling and bruising gradually subside. It’s critical for patients to avoid raising their heart rate during this time, but many patients can work remotely after returning home on their third postoperative day. Dr. Weintraub provides all patients with detailed post-operative instructions. During this first week, most patients feel well enough to move around the house or apartment, but they should refrain from exercise and active socializing.
Weeks 2–4
By the second week, patients can return to gentle exercise and socializing. Swelling will have diminished significantly by upwards of 80%. Patients should continue to avoid drinking alcohol and smoking. By the third week, patients can return to full, impact exercise as well as yoga and their usual pre-surgery routine.
1–3 Months
The most important postoperative behavior to implement during the first several months is to not let the sun’s rays come in contact with any of the extremely fine incisions carefully sewn by Dr. Weintraub. A strong sunscreen and a hat are excellent ways to protect these nearly invisible incisions, preserving their thinness and preventing discoloration.
6–12 Months
The last minuscule bit of swelling diminishes in the last six months, often so slight that it is undetectable. The midface will be elegantly resuspended, the nasolabial folds (the lines from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth) will have softened; the jowls will be reduced, and the jawline will be defined. Male and female patients delight in the fact that their results are natural and understated, aligned with Dr. Weintraub’s philosophy of sophisticated, less-is-more improvement.
Frequently Asked Questions About Facelift Surgery in New York, NY
1. What is a facelift, and what does it achieve?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure performed by a skilled plastic surgeon to restore a youthful appearance to the face and neck. This type of surgery addresses sagging skin, deep folds, and loss of definition along the jawline and neck by lifting and repositioning the underlying tissues. The result is facial rejuvenation with a natural look.
2. Who is a good candidate for facelift surgery?
Good candidates for a facelift surgery are individuals who wish to correct significant signs of facial aging such as sagging jowls, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and hanging necks accompanied by excess skin. Ideal patients are in good overall health, do not use nicotine, and have realistic expectations about the outcome. Consulting a facial plastic surgeon will determine if this type of surgery will give you the rejuvenated appearance you desire.
3. What different facelift options are available in New York?
New York offers various facelift options, ranging from a full facelift, a hybrid facelift, a deep-plane facelift, to more targeted procedures like a mini facelift or neck lift. A full facelift addresses both midface and lower-face aging; a hybrid facelift addresses the three depths of the anatomical surgical plane; the deep-plane facelift addresses the deepest anatomical depth, while a mini facelift focuses on specific areas with less extensive incisions. The choice between a full facelift, a hybrid facelift, a deep-plane facelift and a mini facelift depends on the individual needs of a patient, which a Board-certified plastic surgeon will evaluate during a consultation.
4. How long does it take to recover from facelift surgery?
Recovery from a facelift generally occurs in stages, and the recovery time varies from office to office. At Dr. Weintraub’s, most patients are fully back to their presurgical lives by the third week postoperatively. Noticeable bruising and swelling generally disappear by the second week. While light exercise can resume after two weeks, full return to normal life can take up to three weeks. The recovery time is often quicker due to Dr. Weintraub’s meticulous techniques. Following your facial plastic surgeon’s aftercare instructions facilitates optimal healing.
5. Are the results of a facelift permanent?
As facial plastic surgeons can attest, facelift results are long-lasting but not permanent, because the natural facial aging process continues. However, complex suturing techniques resuspend facial tissues, slowing the aging process. On average, patients enjoy their results for 10–15 years. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and skincare routine can help prolong the facial rejuvenation effects of the procedure. The goal is to achieve timeless, natural results that age gracefully.
6. What should I consider when researching the top facial plastic surgeon in New York for my facelift?
When searching online for the “best plastic surgeons” for your facelift, always look for board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Study the before-and-after photos for elegant, natural results. Seek a surgeon with extensive experience in facial plastic surgery, and during your consultation, evaluate if the surgeon and his staff are truly listening to your needs. Are you being rushed, or do they have time for your residual questions? Does the surgeon make himself or herself available to you and your questions after the consultation? Is the surgical facility impressive, private, licensed and inspected? Do you feel you are amongst medical professionals, or do you feel like you are being “sold?” A personalized and unrushed approach, like Dr. Barry Weintraub’s, ensures your safety and satisfaction. Reading patient testimonials can also give insight into a surgeon’s expertise and quality of care.
7. Is facelift surgery safe, and what are the risks?
When performed by an experienced, Board-certified facial plastic surgeon in an accredited facility, facelift surgery is considered safe among surgical procedures. Risks are typically minimal but can include infection, swelling, or temporary numbness. The best plastic surgeons create a surgical plan based on the unique needs and desires of each patient, and encourage open communication throughout the process to mitigate risks and achieve a smooth recovery. It’s essential to follow all pre- and post-operative recommendations.
